From the porch at dusk I watched
a kingfisher wild in flight
he could only have made for joy.
April 28th:
“Before Dark” by Wendell Berry
Reading a poem about dusk and a river and a joyful flight against the buzz of voices and the tromping of shoes in a busy history museum: my oldest daughter just presented at the state level for the Virginia History Day contest. Her project was about Rachel Carson and the environmental movement. Her exhibit is in the shape of a bird—a robin, to be exact, in remembrance of the ones Carson’s friend found dead after spraying DDT in her aviary. That galvanized Carson. Delight galvanizes the kingfisher. My daughter’s interest in science and her passion for nature galvanizes me. What galvanizes you?
"Led by his delight." Thank you for this, Rebecca. I don't feel particularly galvanized at the moment. Too much stretching myself beyond the boundaries of who I am and what helps me move through the world with grace. This morning I had a few encounters with birds, Cape Batis and Robin in particular. And they were full of delight. Good reminders to follow and embrace joy.
